This the shocking moment a girl is rescued from being hit by a train with just a split-second to spare.

In the footage the girl can be seen playing with a friend on a station platform when their hula hoop fell on to the tracks.

As she jumps jumps down to retrieve the toy a passenger train starts to pull into the station.

Struggling to climb back on to the platform, the girl faces almost certain death until a quick thinking woman dashes to her rescue, dragging her off the tracks as he train screeches past.

Transport bosses in Australia have released the CCTV footage of the incident at Flemington station near Sydney to warn of the potentially deadly consequences of trespassing on the railways.

They have released other footage which also includes a man taking a selfie on the tracks.

It comes after transport officials revealed 18 people died in New South Wales last year after being hit by a train.

Andrew Constance, transport minister said: "Stay off the tracks or face injury or death."
