  • Meet the artist behind Beyonce's pregnancy photo - BBC

Beyonce's pregnancy announcement portrait is now the most liked Instagram post of all time. But who is the artist behind the image? The photo of Beyonce wearing a veil and cradling her stomach has now been liked over eight million times.

This might not be a big deal for the 35-year-old singer. But it's a huge accomplishment for Awol Erizku, the artist who took the famous photo - and the entire series of pregnancy photos that Beyonce has since uploaded to her website.

Here are five things you should know about him.

    Who is he?

Born in Ethiopia, 28-year-old Awol grew up in the South Bronx area of New York. In 2014, he graduated from Yale University with a masters in fine art and his work often fuses photography, video installations and sculpture. And while he's now responsible for the most liked picture on Instagram, Awol has a humble following on his own social media accounts.

He has a strange way of using social media to share his work

If you've tried to find more of his work on Instagram after seeing his portrait of Beyonce, you probably know already that his page is closed for business. The 28-year-old treats his Instagram account like an art gallery, where he hosts Instagram-only art shows. For example, his account has detail about "gallery" opening hours: timings for when his feed is opened up for public viewing.

He combines his art with music

With each of his exhibitions, Awol has released what he calls a conceptual mixtape. Think of this as a kind of soundtrack to the artist's latest creations. One of Awol's most played mixes was released alongside a film and photo project called Serendipity, which was a response to the Black Lives Matter movement in America.

  • U.S Embassy in Addis Ababa issued a statement about some of the news that were circulating in social media

We have seen questions on Facebook about a quota system for Ethiopian visa applicants.

Last week, the President of the United States initiated a review of national security procedures which applies to visitors and potential immigrants from seven countries. Ethiopia is not among those seven countries and Ethiopian citizens are not addressed nor affected by the President’s executive order.

The U.S. Government remains committed to facilitating legitimate travel for international visitors. In fact, in 2016, the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa issued more than 18,000 non-immigrant visas, with the majority to Ethiopian applicants.

For more information on the recent Executive Order or on the application process for U.S. visas:

  • The 15 Most Dangerous Roads in the World

There is nothing more relaxing than a slow ride through the countryside. These roads are nice due to the absence of fast cars. Apart from the calm countryside roads, there are the dangerous roads that turn your knuckles white.

It’s hard to compare driving on dangerous roads to anything else. Some of them are hand-built, others are completely hidden by water or rocks.

Fasten your seat belts, because the Bright Side put together a compilation of 15 craziest roads that are worth exploring.

    Zoji La, India

Ladakh and Kashmir are connected by this 9-km-long road. On top of everything, this road is extremely narrow, although it has to fit in both drivers and livestock.

    Transfăgărășan, Romania

This road is located in the Carpathian Mountains and pierces the Făgăraș massif. It reaches a 2034-meter height and is the tallest road in Romania. Transfăgărășan is known for its gorgeous sights and its danger.

    Dalton Highway, Alaska

Dalton Highway is the most isolated highway in the world. It is 666 km long, and only connects 3 small villages. This road is considered the snowiest highway in the world.

    Khardung La, India

According to officials, this road is 5602 meters tall (practically taller than Mount Elbrus). Guinness World Records and National Geographic recognized Khardung La as the tallest pass road in the world.

    Yungas Road, Bolivia

This highway is one of the most dangerous roads in the world. It takes 200 — 300 lives a year. Steep mountains are on one side, and a cliff on the other (about 600 meters tall). It is scary to think about driving on this road!

    Atlantic Ocean Road, Norway

Atlantic Ocean Road connects small, coastal villages. By the way, this road is really meant for tourists, because the sights there are breathtaking.

    Guoliang Tunnel, China

Guoliang Tunnel was built by the locals. A road cut out of the mountain was the only way of communication between the village and the outside world. Later, the government built a 1200-meter tunnel to help the locals with transportation.

    Le Passage du Gois, France

Weirdly enough, this road is only open for a few hours every day. The road is hidden underwater for the rest of the day. Before entering the 4.5 km highway, read the schedule of tides. Otherwise, your car will simply sink.

    Tianmen Mountain road, China

This road is 10 km long. It has 99 steep turns, and the difference in height between its beginning and its end is about 1,000 meters. Drivers here definitely need nerves of steel.

    Hana, Hawaii

This 112 km road connects Kahului and Hana, on the Hawaiian island Maui. The narrow sinuous road connects 59 bridges, 46 of which only have one lane. The road is often closed due to the landslides.

    ’Kolima’, Russia

The official title of the road that connects Yakutsk and Magadan is ’Kolima’; however, people always call it ’the death road’. The first 90 km were built by 1932 by prisoners. The construction was complete by 1953.

    Col de la Bonette, France

This dangerous mountain pass is located on a 2000-meter height in the French Alps, right by the Italian border. This road has steep and unexpected turns.

    Gotthard Pass, Switzerland

This is one of the tallest mountain passes in the Alps. A 64-km-long road goes from side to side and surprises passengers with its scenic views.

    ’Caucasus’ road, Russia

This narrow road connects Sochi and the Ritsa lake through the mountains. It is scary and impressive at the same time. It’s worth seeing at least once.

    Eshima Ohashi bridge, Japan

Although it is just a bridge, it is as dangerous as the roads we mentioned above. The bridge connects Sakaiminato and Matsue. It is about 1.7 km long, and 11.3 meters wide. From the far, the bridge seems impossible to climb. This height allows large ships to pass underneath.

  • Haile Awaits City Admin Approval For Hyundai Assembly Plant Plot

The legendary long-distance athlete and investment tycoon, Haile Gebresilassie, said that he is still waiting for the approval of the Addis Ababa City Administration cabinet to secure a plot of land he requested to build an assembly plant for the Korean vehicle brand Hyundai in the southwestern outskirts of Addis Ababa.

However, sources told The Reporter that the city cabinet had a meeting last week where it evaluated Haile’s request for land but rejected it because the requested land size is too large in view of the current shortage of investment land. However, sources further said that the cabinet is still planning to reconsider provided that Haile is willing to reduce size of the plot considerably.

However, Haile said that the plot has not yet been confirmed by the city formally.

Haile had requested some 70 hectares of land for the car assembly originally. On his part, Haile told The Reporter that he recognizes the need to reduce it to 30 hectares. “I understand the problems in investment land shortage which the administration is feeling in recent times”.

He also told The Reporter that he applied for the plot almost two years ago. He said that his plan was to build the plant and begin assembly operation immediately.

He also said that the Korean carmaker’s board reapproved Haile’s car assembly plant to manufacture the vehicle in Ethiopia recently.

He also said his company’s engineers were sent to Korea to received practical training in Hyundai’s factory.

  • RUSSIAN PRESIDENT PUTIN’S COMMENTS ON ALLAH UPSETS MUSLIMS

Ever since Muslim-controlled Turkey shot down a Russian jet last month, Putin has been upping his rhetoric against the religion. After announcing his decision on imposing some stricter sanctions on Turkey, he said something that drew a backlash from some Muslims. Putin said during a press conference that he was not interested in “saber-rattling” with Turkey. He promised stronger sanctions on the country.

After Putin’s statements the Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak announced that Russia would be ending the talks on the Ankara Turkish gas steam pipeline, a move designed, he said, “to emphasize the strength of Kremlin anger.”

Putin then made some chiding remarks to Turkey’s Muslim-controlled government during a press conference recently. He said:

“We are not planning to engage in military saber-rattling (with Turkey),” Putin declared. “But if anyone thinks that having committed this awful war crime, the murder of our people, that they are going to get away with some measures concerning their tomatoes or some limits on construction and other sectors, they are sorely mistaken.”

“All in all, dear colleagues, I do not understand why they did this,” Putin said. “Perhaps only Allah knows.”

“It appears that Allah decided to punish the ruling clique of Turkey by depriving them of wisdom and judgment,” Putin joked.

That didn’t go down well with a lot of Muslims who thought he was very disrespectful.

IF YOU HAVE THESE TWO HOLES ON YOUR BACK YOU ARE REALLY SPECIAL

They are called Venus holes; these are small circles, which are formed on the lower back in men and women. If they are found in men then they are called Apollo holes.

They are located on the site of the junction between the two bones of the pelvis, and can be seen only in people who have this genetic predisposition or the appropriate size ligaments. We cannot choose whether we have them or not, because it usually depends on genetics.

They are a sign of good circulation and a healthy body, a great circulation is an important prerequisite to achieve orgasm more easily.

Since Venus holes are located at the place where there is no muscle, it is impossible to create some exercises that can make them show up, but if you work to eliminate excess body fat, these holes can become visible.

  • Minimize Mobile internet Fee’s

Smart phones and mobile internet have changed our lives. They have become an integral part of our lives and we heavily depend on them for our day to day activities. Despite that, mobile data usage on smart phones can be costly at times. Are you sick of the mobile internet fee’s? There are several measures you could take to minimize mobile internet fee’s:

    1)Restrict background data

    • Background data is all that internet traffic that goes on when you’re not actually using an app: email syncing, feeds updating, weather widgets and so on.

    2)Stop Using the Facebook app

    • Facebook app is one of the biggest consumers of data, not to mention its high resource use and battery drain.

3)Make use of offline apps, games and services

    • Some apps and games require constant internet access to function: this can be simply a security measure or because they constantly need to retrieve data. There are some apps and games that don’t require internet access at all after the initial download.

    4) Disable auto-updating apps

    • If you have the Play Store set to auto-update apps, even over a data connection, this could be chewing its way through your allowance every month without you even knowing.

    5) Identify and limit/remove high consuming apps

    • In Settings > Data usage you can get a look at the apps which are consuming the most data both in the foreground and the background.
    • You could remove the app, limit how often it syncs or prevent it from downloading attachments, all of which would reduce data consumption.

    6) Don’t upload, download or send pictures or videos

    • A single minute of high definition footage captured on a modern smart phone can take up as much as 200 MB of data. Single photos can easily exceed 40 MB.

In addition to these recommendations, If your mobile data connection is 3G you need to take some precautions. Here is why? Theoretically data consumption will be the same, except it will take longer time to do a task (loading email or downloading picture) on 2G. 3G makes difference while watching videos on Mobile. If you are using 2G the video quality will be usually 240p or less, however 3G will automatically select high resolutions like 340p or 480p. Which will increase the internet costs.

  • Footballer who survived Colombian plane tragedy was reading Bible

It was reported that the footballer who survived was reading Bible passage about being safe 'in the shadow of your wings' before crash it emerges as his book is found

The bible, belonging to Chapecoense centre back Helio Neto, was found at the scene of the crash and has been handed to the footballer's wife.

His wife said Neto, who is still fighting for his life in hospital, is deeply religious and takes the religious scripture with him everywhere.

A bookmark had been inserted next to Psalm 63, which talks about being safe in the shadow of God's wings and about thinking of God in bed.

In detail it says: 'On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night; Because you have been my help; Then I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings.

'My soul follows you closely; Your right hand upholds me.'

Video footage shows journalist Roberto Cabrini at the scene of the wreckage and noticing the book, with a note inside saying it belongs to the defender, who is in a critical condition.

The reporter can be seen visibly shaking as he realises what it is.

He reads with a shaky voice the name that is printed on the inside of the cover, as behind him we can see the wreckage of the crash.

Mangled parts of the plane can be seen in the background and Cabrini is later seen taking the bible to the wife of Neto, who smiles as she realises what she is being given.

Neto's condition has been described as 'delicate' by doctors who said they regularly have to 'stabilise' him as he has a 'serious pulmonary infection.'

  • Easy ways to dramatically reduce your mobile data usage on Android

    1. Restrict background data

The easiest way to save data is to tell your apps (or the Android system itself) to restrict background data. Background data is all that internet traffic that goes on when you're not actually using an app: email syncing, feeds updating, weather widgets and so on.

    2. Ditch the Facebook app

It's pretty well known among Android aficionados that the Facebook app is one of the biggest consumers of data, not to mention its high resource use and battery drain. So why not replace it with something less demanding?

    3. Disable auto-updating apps

Another huge drain of your data allowance comes from the occasional bout of Google Play app updating. If you have the Play Store set to auto-update apps, even over a data connection, this could be chewing its way through your allowance every month without you even knowing.

    4. Use Opera's video compression

The Opera for Android browser now has a very useful video compression option, which can save you a load of data if you're frequently watching videos on the go. To use it, simply download the Opera browser, go to Settings > Data savings and tick the box that says Video compression. This setting not only saves you data, but also means that videos are more likely to load faster

    5. Compress Chrome pages

If you use Chrome for all your web traffic, this tip alone can save you 30-35 percent of yif our mobile browser data consumption. The Data Saver option compresses web pages before loading them in your browser.

Using Data Saver does slow things down a tiny bit, but you quickly get used to it and a moment's delay is worth it when your data lasts so much longer. Just launch Chrome, tap the three dots in the top right-hand corner, go down to Settings and then to Data Saver. Keep an eye on the graph to see your data saving

  • 10 THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER PUT ON YOUR FACE! (NUMBER 9 WILL COMPLETELY DISAPPOINT YOU)

Unfortunately, the Internet is loaded with many different DIY remedies, tips and methods – including skin care tips. Well, we’re not saying that they’re bad for you! We’re just saying that you should be very careful because some of them can do more harm than good! Yes, some of these homemade skin remedies can do more damage to your skin – than improve its health. As we said, there are many different homemade skin care tips, homemade creams, and other DIY skin care products on the internet today! But, you should be very careful and avoid using this 10 homemade remedies and ingredients!

    1. Hairspray

You’ve probably noticed that many different home remedies for skin care include hairspray! Why – because the hairspray will help you dry out the acne and help you with other skin problems. Yes, hairspray will dry out your skin and acne, but it will also clog your pores and lead to irritation of the skin.

    1. Body Lotion

The body lotion is called body lotion for a good reason – it is specially designed for your body, not your face. The skin on your body is much thicker and more resistant. And, you should know that the body lotions usually contain more aroma and fewer ingredients that are intended to moisturize.

    1. Toothpaste

Many people around the world apply toothpaste on their face – usually to dry out the acne. Yes, this will help you with your acne problems, but, unfortunately, it will also irritate the skin and can cause serious skin problems, such as chemical burns or scars.

    1. Vaseline

Many people around the world use Vaseline to moisturize their dry or chapped skin. You can also use this ingredient to treat bites from bugs or cuts, but, you should be very careful because this ingredient is not the best solution for your face. When you apply Vaseline for the first time, you usually get that feeling like it’s too moisturizing and softening your skin, but it actually leads to more pimples and dry condition.

    1. Hot water

We all love a hot and steamy shower. But, you should be very careful, because too much hot water will soften the natural oils and remove the protective barrier that keeps moisture from escaping. This will cause more dryness.

    1. Hydrogen Peroxide

Many people around the world use this powerful ingredient to prevent infection of minor cuts and burns, but – you should know that hydrogen peroxide isn’t a good choice for treating acne. Many experts around the world also say that hydrogen peroxide can cause inflammation and allergic reactions.

    1. Sugar

Many different DIY skin care products contain sugar, right? This is another idea that seems like it will work, but it actually does more harm than good. As we mentioned before, your facial skin is not as elastic as the skin on your body. This ingredient may be good for your body or your feet, but it can damage your skin on the face.

    1. Alcohol

Alcohol can be beneficial for many different things, but not for your face. The alcohol may be used to sterilize the wound and prevent infection. When you apply alcohol on your face, you can feel the freshness, but it can actually dissolve the DNA of your skin cells, resulting in dead skin cells.

    1. Baking soda

We all know that baking soda has a rough texture and consistency, which is the main reason why many people think that this is the best ingredient for skin peeling. The experts say that maintaining the natural pH balance is vital to have a healthy skin. So, if you use baking soda to restore this balance, it will damage your skin and prevent it being able to retain moisture.

    1. Lemon

You should know that the lemon can disrupt your pH balance from your face, which means that you should avoid using any of these items on site. As we said you should avoid these 10 ingredients, because they can do more harm than good! We really hope you find this article helpful and don’t forget to share it with your friends and family. Thank You and take care!

whenever we connect to a WiFi network and enter the password to connect to that network, we actually make a WLAN profile of that WiFi network. That profile is stored inside our computer along with the other required details of the WiFi profile.
These steps work even when you are totally offline or you are not connected to the particular wifi you are looking the password for.
How to know the WiFi password using cmd:
1.Open the command prompt and run it as administrator.
    2. In the next step, we want to know about all the profiles that are stored in our computer. So, type the following command in the cmd:
    netsh wlan show profile
This command will list out all the WiFi profiles that you have ever connected to.
    3. Type the following command to see the password of any WiFi network:
netsh wlan show profile WiFi-name key=clear
    4. Under the security settings, in the ‘key content’, you see the WiFi password of that particular network.
Besides knowing the password, you can also use this result to further optimize your WiFi. For example, Under the profile information, you can see mac randomization is disabled. You can turn on mac randomization feature to avoid your location tracking based on the device’s MAC address.
Here is how to turn on mac randomization on Windows 10:
1.Go to settings and click on ‘Network & internet’
2.Choose the ‘WiFi’ in the left pane and click on the advanced option.
    3. Turn on the ‘Random Hardware Address’ feature under this settings. If your wireless hardware does not support this feature, the “ Random Hardware Addresses ” section will not show up at all in the settings app.
Once you have turned this on, you are done.
Also, under the connectivity settings, in radio type, you can see the whole list. Channel interference could be another reason for a slow WiFi. So, next time, you might also like to change the radio type settings for a better speed.
As far as radio type is concerned, you can also change that in your router for a better connection or connectivity.
If you are also aware of some more tricks and tweaks like this, please put them in the comment below. We would be happy to feature some of those in our next articles.

  • Everything You Need To Know About Sugar Babies

“I always say this and people take it the wrong way, but I think it’s awkward to date someone who makes less money than me.”

This bold statement comes from Brook, a pretty 24-year-old who is easily the centre of gravity at the bar we’re in. Originally from California, she has long brown hair falling in loose curls to her shoulders, and a confident manner that makes socialising a breeze.

She’s good company, and she knows it – if I were wealthy and had a penis, she might even charge me for it. Brook is a sugar baby, you see. She arranges relationships with sugar daddies, men (usually older, always richer) who shower her with gifts and money.

We’re in a bar in central London, drinking strawberry-topped champagne with 30 other women who want to be more like Brook. Hosted bySeekingArrangement.com, an online dating site for sugar relationships, this is an event for sugar babies to network and swap tips. Brook, who’s been a sugar baby for four years, is a spokeswoman for the brand and says it’s not all about the money.

“I want to feel that someone’s on my level and that I can learn from them, and that they’re at least as successful as me. It’s just, like, you have to have a similar lifestyle expectation to get along. And that’s true of any successful relationship.”

Since launching in 2006, Seeking Arrangement has swelled to over 5.5 million members. If you’re in search of a pretty young thing and are prepared to put your money where your heart is, then the odds are in your favour – a whopping 4 million of Seeking Arrangement’s users are sugar babies. Just be aware that joining the site will pit you against other sugar daddies with an average salary of around £220,000.

But despite Seeking Arrangement’s many members, mainstream morality still tends to look down on sugar babies. Outlandish Daily Mail headlines decry such scandalous behaviour, while ‘gold digger’ is still a common insult used to describe a manipulative woman willing to use her sexuality to ensnare a rich, unwitting man. Is that really what’s going on in modern sugar relationships?

As I stand here in this pretend-cave bar, surrounded by fake foliage and an exotic fish tank, I can’t help but be reminded of the kitsch 90s game show Man O Man. To many, the concept of sugar dating is just as throwback. At a time when women are free to pursue their own careers and make their own money, why do sugar babies choose to stay dependent upon men? Just as the rise of third-wave feminism tries to crush the idea that a woman’s worth comes only from her ability to attract men, why do sugar babies appear to be running backwards towards old, sexist tropes? And what kind of man is actually willing to pay money for a ‘relationship’?

    The Spoiling

Brook first fell into the sugar game as a 20-year old journalism student. In the bar of Las Vegas' five-star Cosmopolitan hotel, a 37-year old man who “made most of his money in tech” decided to make his move on her.

They arranged to meet for dinner and hit it off. The following weekend she visited him in Miami where they checked into a fancy hotel room and went shopping. In the five months the long-distance relationship lasted, Brook was treated to a series of holidays, Louis Vuitton shoes and more shopping. But it ended when things started getting too serious. “He wanted me to move to Miami and switch schools, and I didn’t want that because I wasn’t ready – I couldn’t even drink,” she tells me.

It wasn’t actually until a friend told her to join Seeking Arrangement that Brook realised she had been a sugar baby. “I was like, ‘What do you mean? There’s a word for that?’” Not only did she sign up to the site, but she applied for a job there and now travels the world representing the brand.

Brook sees the main difference between a sugar relationship and a “normal” relationship as “the spoiling. And me being OK with being spoiled. A lot of women are not okay with even having dinner paid for them. They’re not comfortable with a man taking care of them,” she says.

“And I totally, 100% respect that, more power to you. But there’s the other girls who don’t want to go Dutch, who do want a guy to take care of them, who expect a guy to pay – and I’ve always expected a guy to pay.”

    Mutually Beneficial

Although the bar is largely full of young women, keen to learn how to turn their encounters into something financially rewarding, my expectations are being challenged. I spot a young man, seeking a sugar daddy himself perhaps – or maybe a sugar mama? It’s not just the older-guy-and-younger-girl stereotype. Roughly 1 in 8 sugar babies on Seeking Arrangement are men (a mix of both straight and LGBT men), while for every three sugar daddy members there is also one sugar mama.

Brook tells me about sugar daddies who aren’t looking for sex because they’re older and unable to perform, or married men whose wives don’t want to hear all of their gripes at the end of the day. “They want to have a beautiful girl who will touch their arm and tell them everything’s OK,” she says.

“I know a sugar daddy who was going through a transition late in life to become a woman,” Brook says. She talks of a transgender woman who had recently divorced her wife of around 40 years and now had no one to talk to. Through Seeking Arrangement, she found a female sugar baby who taught her how to wear makeup, accompanied her in public during her transition and who she could talk to.

For Laura*, 21, a sugar relationship saved her from a situation that had become increasingly desperate. As a student in London nearing her exams, she was forced to get a restraining order on her house mate, who had become aggressive and had started destroying her possessions.

Moving into emergency accommodation, she was left with piling housing debts, which weren’t helped by a scheming landlord who had stolen her deposit. Around the same time, one of her parents lost their job while the other was demoted, and Laura worked three jobs in order to pay her rent and send money home for their mortgage. Unsurprisingly, she became ill from the stress.

“I was like, even with all my jobs, I need to move and stat, or otherwise I don’t even know what’s going to happen to me,” she says. “I was thinking about sex work and escorting. But I was like, I don’t want to get into sex work through desperation.”

When Laura joined Seeking Arrangement, her first few dates were “completely platonic”. “I was like, I’m not going to sleep with anyone, I’m just here for theatre shows, trips, companionship. And I managed to make a few hundred just from that.”

Then she met a couple in their thirties who shared similar interests with her and who she got on well with. They paid her £500 a month to be in an open relationship with them and took her to Paris. Laura says the sex developed naturally. “They weren’t paying me to have sex with them, they were paying me because we were in a relationship. They cared about me.”

Although the relationship ended after six or seven months, the experience was, for Laura, a positive one, and she continues to seek sugar relationships today.  “All my other relationships have been platonic. Just from the last couple of weeks I’ve made £500 from dates with people. So I think it can be such a good thing for girls to do.”

  • Ethiopia’s internet crackdown hurts everyone

Ethiopia has never been an easy place to operate. But a six-month state of emergency, combined with internet and travel restrictions imposed in response to a wave of anti-government protests, means it just got a whole lot harder.

The government has targeted the mobile data connections that the majority of Ethiopians use to get online. Internet users have also been unable to access Facebook Messenger and Twitter, with a host of other services also rendered unreliable.

This has impacted everyone: from local businesses, to foreign embassies, to families, as well as the extensive and vital international aid community.

“Non-governmental organisations play crucial roles in developing countries, often with country offices in the capitals, satellite offices across remote regions, and parent organisations in foreign countries,” said Moses Karanja, an internet policy researcher at Strathmore University in Nairobi.  “They need access to the internet if their operations are to be efficiently coordinated.”

The Ethiopian government has been candid about the restrictions being in response to year-long anti-government protests in which hundreds of people have died.

It has singled out social media as a key factor in driving unrest. Since the beginning of October, there has been a spike in violence resulting in millions of dollars’ worth of damage to foreign-owned factories, government buildings and tourist lodges across Oromia Region, initially ground zero for the dissent.

“Mobile data will be permitted once the government assesses that it won’t threaten the implementation of the state of emergency,” government spokesman Getachew Reda – who has since been replaced – told a 26 October press conference in Addis Ababa.

The Oromo are the country’s largest ethnic group, constituting 35 percent of the country’s nearly 100 million population. They have historically felt ignored by successive regimes in Addis Ababa. In August, similar grassroots protest broke out among the Amhara, Ethiopia’s second largest ethnic group. The ruling EPRDF is portrayed by opponents as a narrow, unrepresentative clique that refuses to share power.

Ethiopia is not alone in its approach to political unrest. Around the world, as countries become increasingly integrated with online technology, the more autocratic governments are blocking the internet whenever they deem it necessary.

“The trend appears to be growing because more people are going online and using the internet, often through the use of mobile connections,” said Deji Olukotun of Access Now, which campaigns for digital rights. In 2016, it documented 50 shutdowns, up from less than 20 in 2015.

“People are enjoying the freedom and opportunity that the internet provides, which enables them to organise themselves and advocate for what they want,” Olukotun told IRIN. “In response, governments are shutting down the net to stop this practice.”

  • South Africa’s ‘Prophet of Doom’ condemned

In a Facebook post, self-proclaimed prophet Lethebo Rabalago claims a pesticide called Doom can heal people.

The company that produces Doom warned of the risks of spraying the substance, while a government commission urged anyone affected to lodge complaints.

But the pastor has defended his actions, telling the BBC he is using unconventional methods to heal people.

The country has seen a wave of practices where church members have been subjected to unorthodox rituals to receive healing.

In photos circulating on Facebook and Twitter, Mr Rabalago, who runs the Mount Zion General Assembly in the Limpopo province, is seen spraying the insecticide directly into the eyes and various body parts of his congregants.

He told the BBC’s Nomsa Maseko in Johannesburg that he had sprayed the face of one woman because she had an eye infection and claimed the woman was “just fine because she believed in the power of God”.

He also claims the spray can heal cancer and HIV.

“Doom is just a name, but when you speak to it to become a healing product, it does. People get healed and delivered through doom,” a post on the church’s Facebook account reads.

Testimonies of people who have supposedly been healed by Doom have also been posted on the Facebook page.

In another interview, , the pastor is heard saying: “The truth is, Doom can heal people in the right way.”
